evaluation criteria + expectations

evaluation criteria: students enrolled in this course are expected to participate fully by attending classes regularly and being actively involved in classroom discussions and/or presentations.  active participation involves raising questions about and/or commenting on the terms and issues under discussion.  your participation should demonstrate that you have done the required readings.  work submitted for assignments must be submitted on time, and according to the criteria established in the assignment description.  if there is any confusion about these assignments, it is the responsibility of the student to make an appointment with me, well in advance of the due date, to clarify the assignment expectations.  if screenings are missed it is the responsibility of the student to see the film on your own time.

requirements/performance/attendance/operational procedures: students will be required to attend all classes, prepared to partake.  assigned readings will be taken up and each student is required to participate in the discussion of these readings.  on those occasions when group presentations are scheduled all members of the class are required to come to class prepared to contribute to the presentation. in general, contributions to classroom discussions should be well thought out and respectful of other student’s contributions: they will be evaluated less on quantity than by quality.

students are required to submit all of their assignments on time, at the beginning of the class on the date on which they are due.  these assignments are expected to be completed according to established criteria and must demonstrate a high level of literacy.   all assignments must be submitted with full references to all research material.   assignments will not be accepted otherwise.  one mark per day will be deducted for the late submission of assignments.  if assignments are submitted more than one week late they will not receive more than a passing mark (60%), if deserved.

attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class.  more than two missed classes (without a documented medical reason) will jeopardize the student’s grade.  punctuality is also imperative, both at the beginning of class and when returning from breaks. if you need to leave early for any reason, please advise me of this at the beginning of class and sit beside or close to the door, so as not to disturb your colleagues.   talking during lectures, presentations and screenings is discouraged.  so is frequent coming and going from class, during the lecture/presentation or the film screening.  eating in class is also discouraged.  cell phones must be turned off while in class.  students using cell phones will be asked to leave and marked as absent for the class.  laptops are to be used for notetaking only.  students using laptops for other reasons will also be asked to leave and marked as absent from the class. finally, classes will conclude at 15 minutes before the end of the time-block, in order to allow travel time between classes.  please do not prepare yourself for leaving until this time (i.e. no closing books, filling and zipping bags, etc.).
